Biodivocean

Coastal Development

BiodivOcean is an Erasmus+ initiative to enhance ocean literacy and raise awareness about marine biodiversity through innovative education and citizen science. The project focuses on the vital role of marine biodiversity and the challenges it faces, like invasive species and microplastics.

Building on the foundation of the VIRTUE project, BiodivOcean gives teachers, educators, and students tools to explore and learn about the marine ecosystems using inclusive, hands-on experiences and digital platforms, supporting both formal education and informal learning environments. Participants can study local marine life using specially designed VIRTUE racks to observe biofouling, the natural colonisation of submerged surfaces by aquatic organisms. This approach, developed over two decades of work with teachers, fosters active learning, critical thinking, and a meaningful connection with the ocean.

BiodivOcean also provides training and support for teachers and those working with the youth. The project co-develops dynamic educational resources, including teaching units, digital tools, training, and a MOOC, designed for diverse age groups and learning environments. By offering engaging, accessible tools to teach about ocean biodiversity and the threats it faces, the project aims to inspire participants care for and connect with the marine environment.

SALT´s role in the project
SALT is the latest addition to the VIRTUE group, which has been working together for decades. SALT brings our knowledge of the Arctic marine ecosystems and experience working with school science and citizen science projects. SALT contributes to the WP2 Communication and Dissemination Strategy, and WP4 development of educational resources and teacher training activities. SALT is the leader of work package 5, outreach and implementation, and, naturally, in charge of introducing the VIRTUE tools in Norway.

Our goal?
To build a connected network of educators and students passionate about ocean conservation, equipped with the tools to protect our blue planet. While our pilots will take place in Troms and Finnmark counties, we welcome teachers, educators and schools from anywhere in Norway to be in touch and join the project. To join the project as a teacher, educator, school, class, or youth group is free; email the project manager, Elina.

Upcoming activities
A three-day teachers' symposium will be organised in Barcelona from 30th June to 2nd July 2025. The seminar is an excellent opportunity to meet international colleagues and discuss how to integrate teaching marine biodiversity and citizen science projects in the school curriculum. The event includes lectures, workshops and field trips. Participation is free of charge, and there is a possibility of applying for a scholarship to support travel and accommodation costs.
