OSPAR Marine Litter Monitoring in Norway

Marine Litter

As part of Norway’s follow-up of the Oslo-Paris Convention (OSPAR), the monitoring of marine litter will be expanded in 2024 from seven to thirteen selected sites along the Norwegian coast. SALT has been assigned responsibility by The Norwegian Environment Agency (formerly Marfo) for carrying out marine litter surveys at selected beaches in three zones: Zone 4 (Vesterålen), Zone 5 (Lofoten), and Zone 10 (parts of Western Norway).

Monitoring will be conducted twice annually in Zones 4 and 5, and three times annually in Zone 10, starting in 2024. All survey results will be reported to the OSPAR database. None of the three zones assigned to SALT have previously been included among the seven OSPAR monitoring sites for marine litter in Norway prior to 2024.
