Mapping of data for the development of ocean condition accounts

Marine Management

SALT and NIVA are carrying out a project commissioned by the Norwegian Environment Agency to map and evaluate existing data for developing condition accounts for marine ecosystems. The work follows the United Nations framework for ecosystem accounting (SEEA EA) and focuses on the sub-Arctic part of the Barents Sea management area, including Lofoten.

The project will identify and assess relevant data sources, explore how these can be applied within the UN framework for environmental-economic accounting, and highlight opportunities for mapping and visualization. It will also identify knowledge gaps and areas that need further research and data development.

Building on insights from the pilot project on marine ecosystem accounting, this initiative represents an important step towards establishing a comprehensive marine ecosystem accounting framework for Norway.
