Emissions into the Oslo Fjord from small boat harbours. A knowledge base for possible local regulations

Marine Management

SALT, in collaboration with Mepex, has assisted the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) in mapping and assessing emissions of antifouling paint from small boat harbours in Oslofjord. The project involved a comprehensive inventory of small boat harbours, marinas and boatyards capable of winter storage on land. SALT identified over 200 sites with a combined storage capacity of approximately 18,000 boats.

Through detailed GIS analysis, SALT and Mepex were able to estimate potential emissions from boat maintenance activity. This has highlighted key areas that require targeted solutions that can reduce environmental impacts. The results will inform strategic and regulatory frameworks aiming to reduce marine pollution and safeguard coastal ecosystems. This analysis can lead to more effective monitoring of identified high-density storage locations.
