Effects of Plastic on Seabirds in Eastern Finnmark

Plastic and other marine litter can end up in seabird nests, potentially affecting both adult birds and chicks. At the same time, little is known about how common this is in Norwegian seabird colonies.
In this project, SALT is developing and testing methods for mapping human-made materials in seabird nests. The work includes field surveys in Eastern Finnmark, photographic documentation, and testing of both manual and automated image analysis. The aim is to develop a non-invasive, standardized method that can be used in future research and monitoring.
