Kittiwake Hotel in Båtsfjord
SALT is collaborating with the Port of Båtsfjord to design and construct a kittiwake hotel in Båtsfjord. The aim is to encourage kittiwakes that currently nest on commercial buildings to relocate to a purpose-built nesting site that accommodates both the birds and the local community.
The black-legged kittiwake is a red-listed seabird species that is increasingly nesting in urban and built-up areas. In Båtsfjord, this creates challenges related to noise and damage to buildings. The kittiwake hotel is intended to support coexistence by providing the birds with a suitable alternative nesting location. The design and placement are being developed in line with recommendations from BirdLife Norway to ensure that the birds adopt the structure for nesting.
The project aims to protect a threatened species, reduce conflicts between birds and local businesses, and strengthen nature-based tourism and public outreach. The hotel will serve as a new attraction and a platform for communicating knowledge about seabirds and life along the coast.
